Spotify finds out how to license AI music 

Spotify’s new AI generated remixes allow fans to create remixes from participating artists. The streaming giant is indirectly tied to Udio through their partnership with Universal Music Group, but does not disclose which AI is powering fan made remixes. 

A new licensing ecosystem has been building in the background to support AI music despite copyright infringement lawsuits. Universal, Warner and Sony all jumped into lawsuits with Suno and Udio in 2024 and have since settled and formed partnerships. 

Suno is in active litigation with UMG and tightened up their platform’s copyright filter four days prior to Spotify’s AI remix update. 

Artist ‘opt-in’ AI licensing may soon fall in line with Spotify’s pay-to-play streaming models that boost streaming numbers after paying fees up to $10,000 or cutting royalty rates.

Google getting closer to Zero

Google Zero is the corporation’s plan to redirect all internet traffic to its AI overviews and services. Their annual update conference announced classic search incorporating agents, Youtube “University” scraping for videos matching your query and Gemini powering all Google account services. 

What’s not reaching the headlines are AI detection tools from the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, C2PA. The open source digital watermark aimed to inform audiences of AI generated media in 2021, is being adopted by the largest AI companies. 

Google announced their own C2PA software, SynthID, and is now used by OpenAI, Nvidia, Kakao and ElevenLabs to confidently identify AI media. Asking AI to identify AI media is currently the easiest way to check C2PA watermarks and does not bypass screenshots.

With AI embedded in tools like Adobe, DAW plugins, and graphic design software, a creator's final product may receive an AI tag without their awareness if not careful.

A big question: how will AI labeled content show up in Google Zero when clients look for your work?
